After watching Gankutsuou (BLOODY FREAKING FABULOUSLY AWESOME ANIME. IT’S THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. IN SPACE. WATCH IT FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. YOU WILL THANK ME LATER), I think I confirmed one of my subconscious seiyuu preferences that I hadn’t been sure of before – I like them deep and evil sounding!
That certainly does explain why I never understood why most fangirls are getting wet at the slightest sigh of popular seiyuus like Ono Daisuke, Suzumura Kenichi, Sakurai Takahiro, Kamiya Hiroshi, Midorikawa Hikaru, etc. Don’t get me wrong, they are all good actors, have voiced characters that I like and so forth, but I never get the hype around (most of) them. They just don’t appeal to me especially not Midorikawa, who just sound horribly nasal and in a desperate need to blow his nose. Even if their voices are special enough to make me recognize them when I hear them in an anime whose voice credits list I haven’t taken a sneak peak on, they still never manage to capture me as much as those who have low pitches and sound all mature and grown-up, rather than the young, handsome bishies in their teens/early twenties. You could say that I prefer my men to sound badass.
My favourites among these deep-voiced seiyuus would be:
~ Nakata Jouji (smooth and menacing at the same time. I haven’t watched any of the Hellsing anime adaptions (yet), but I can’t imagine a better voice for Alucard – THIS guy sounds like he’s got the burning Depths of Hell in his throat!)
~ Hayami Sho (warm and almost comforting, but you can’t get rid of the feeling that you’re dealing with just about the worst, most fucked-up man ever. Sophisticated villain!)
~ Ishii Kouji (his voice’s got a natural echo to it, doesn’t he?)
~ Kusonoki Taiten (commanding! And superb as our beloved Tarundoru-seme-sama!)
~ Tachiki Fumihiko (sounds like he’s spitting out every single word. Wonderfully raw and barbarian, yet with something surprisingly insightful)
~ Ohtsuka Akio (a cool, relaxed old guy you can always trust on and a badass papa that will protect his beloved ones no matter what!)
~ Gouri Daisuke (quite possibly THE deepest and THE coolest voice I have ever heard)
~ Inoue Makio (okay, so I've only heard him in ONE role, but if you're the original Captain Harlock, then you're granted a place on my list. He sounds... hypnotic. Not to mention larger than life)
And… that’s about it.
This, of course, doesn’t mean that I love every single voice actor who sounds like he's gone through puberty and become a dad himself. There are several deep-voiced guys WITH sky-high popularity that just sound average to me. Like Morikawa Toshiyuki; it seems like every seiyuu fan loves him, but I can NEVER recognize his voice, simply because he sounds just way too bland for my ears (and I have watched animes where he was the MAIN character!). Same goes for Narita Ken. BORING! Konishi Katsuyuki is somewhat interesting; I couldn’t care less about his sexy semes, but turn him into a hotblooded dork and I’m in for it – from Bleach, I’d choose his Keigo over his Hisagi ANYDAY, ANYTIME.Though any role he ever does will always be over-shadowed by the epicness that is the great KAMINA-SAMA, of course!!!!. Then there are some others who I guess are okay, but just sound exactly the same in every single role he does, like Koyasu Takehito and Inoue Kazuhiko. That’s no fun.
*thinks*
… As I skimmed through the wall of text I’m working on right now, I figured that yappari, it IS the badassery I’m looking for. I mean, listen to Canna Nobutoshi, Hiyama Nobuyuki and Nakai Kazuya; they don’t sound as deep as any of the seiyuus I mentioned before (except for maybe Nakai), but they have that “dangerous”, sort of blood-thirsty undertone that sends shivers down my spine. I love it! “I might be calm and collected this moment, but one wrong move and I have sliced your head clean off”. THAT is the feeling I get from listening to these guys. Sorta.
Another one I should mention is Seki Toshihiko. He reminds me of Hayami Sho, except more high-pitched. Like, a guy in his late teens could sound like Seki, but when that guy turns into A MAN in his late thirties or early fourties, he will sound like Hayami. Anybody understand my reasoning?
And Suwabe Junichi, well, he is in his own league.
XD Lol, seiyuu post.
