Hi everyone,
I'm new to these boards and a big fan of many things tenipuri related. That said though I still haven't actually gotten around to reading the manga. A crime I know, so on my next trip into town I'm planning to pick up a volume or two. However a couple of people have recently told me that Viz's translation isn't any good??
I was just wondering if anyone could give me any opinions on this?
Would I be wiser buying the Japanese version?
My apologises if I'm posting this in the wrong section I wasn't really sure if this fitted better here or in the Misc. section.

The manga has a couple inconsistiences regarding names. THey're still translatd accurately but sometimes he uses the first name sometime he uses the last.
Other than that there's just a few changes he makes here and there (like in the first few volumes he uses dollars but later in he starts using yen finally).
I find the Viz translation tolerable at worst. I think the complaints are overexagerated considering how bad some translations are out there (Hell, Tokyopop changed all the names of the Initial D characters to make it more accessible to western racing fans).
The only reason I say to get the Japanese at the least is if you want the X.5 volumes since those aren't being released here.

if you can read japanese, go get the japanese version. if you can't, stick with the english version. like thewiredknight said, the english version isn't all that terrible.

Thanks for the info guys.
I think that I'll pick up the Japanese version after all even if the translation isn't all that bad. I'm still learning the language but it'll be good practise for my kanji.
By the way if anyone has read that far in the english version, how do they translate Atobe's ore-sama? Just curious.

I don't recall that coming into play yet since they haven't reached the Hyotei matches as of yet. Thus far though if he has said it it's gone untranslated beyond "I."
Really I think it's best to just not bother with it rather than try to have an english equivalent. We do't have one in this language and anything else would sound very awkward (remember Gozaru being translated as "that it is" in Kenshin and "dattebayo" as "believe it" in Naruto.)
Sometimes these things just don't translate and are best left alone.

True but how would you translate it into english? Unlike terms like sensei they can't be left as is because it's just confusing. And we don't have suffixes or multiple words for oneself.\
I guess you could put "Lord me" but that just sounds stupid.

How about translating it as 'one'? Or would he sound too much like the Queen(of England)? XD
eg. One plays tennis every afternoon :D

They should make the ore-sama into "my highness" or something... or "leetness".
They should totally literally translate it literally like that to "ME LORD" for a retarded factor of 439875435345354. JAYKAY.

I think I'll use 'one' in all my fanfics with him from now on. Cos I'm smart and stuff.
