I think it's because they acknowledge that anime/cartoons isn't just for kids...

Anyway, I had a laugh about how the names are pronounced... and those accents! Everyone here is definitely right, they're between hilarious and painful.

Oishi's voice is OK, as is Inui's (except how he's suddenly ah-noui?)... but Eiji's is just... not Kikumaru Eiji. It's Eiji on tranquilizers!

*g* Still, if it helps promote anime in Westerrn countries, I'll even endure bad dubs...

I seldom see adults watching Cartoon Network or something. >_> but still, couldn't they get, like, professional people to dub them? like the person who's Haku's Englsih voice in Spirited Away. (the dubbed version of that movie isn't that bad, actually). or any other person who DOESN'T SOUND EXAGGERATED.

There are a few professional voice actors for English dubs. And I have to say, some of them *cough*Scott McNeilandtheDobsonbrothers* are really funny to listen to.

True, there ARE professionals out there. Still, it's mostly too expensive to hire "big names" for anime series, I think (like they do for movies like Shrek), and dubbing is atm in a beginning stage IMO (at least in Germany), therefore leaving us with many umm.... enthusiastic... umm... semi-amateurs?

What gets me every time (especially when watching old dubs like DBZ) is the way the translators try to make the series "kid-friendly". Stuff like "I'm gonna send you to the next dimension" comes to mind... (as kids, my brothers and I called any handgun a "mini-beamer" because of that (in spite of knowing the truth). Drove my parents crazy when watching Bond! "Yay! James, beam him up!")

Apparently, YuGiOh! and co were similarly butchered... but I haven't been watching, so I can't say.

My favorite line is from a German dub... I don't even know which anime it was from anymore, but it still sticks around: "His killer killed him with the intention to kill him!" (Sein Mörder hat ihn mit der Absicht, ihn zu ermorden ermordet!) Hah, forget about the Dragon Slave, the Twist Serve or the Kamehameha! Intention to kill, the new ULTIMATE weapon- OUT NOW! Go get yours for the price of your conscience at the nearest retail store!

XD lmao. I'll have to include that in one of my random Flash adventures some day (if you don't mind).
Just so you know: The first series of Yuugiou was based on the first series of the Manga, and while the TV adaptation changed 'Yuugi kills a bunch of people through dangerous games' to 'Yuugi makes people crazy through dangerous mind games', 4kids refused to dub it. I don't blame them, since that screenshot is from my favourite episode: the one with the 'Anzu's a prostitute' joke and the bit where Yuugi balances the lighter on the criminal's gun as the alcohol pours onto his lap. Eventually the guy can't hold on any longer and the lighter falls, he catches on fire and dies, but in the Anime it was 'he goes crazy and is caught', was still badass though.

Another point to make is that the first series wasn't very popular in Japan (according to rumours), which must have put off license-buyers.


I used to have a lot of favourite lines in dubs (like 'Kevin' in Beyblade saying 'you remember the last time I cooked, y'know? With the fire?'), but half the time you couldn't tell if they were real translations or not. I forget most of them over time though.
I remember my Swedish friend was telling me that their version of Pokemon was translated from the English version. So it was translated from Japanese into English into Swedish, and Fushigidane went from Bulbasaur to the Swedish for something like 'light bulb saw'. XD I'll ask her about it tonight~

Whoa, YuGiOh suddenly sounds interesting... I only knew it from my kid cousin before, who spends obscene amounts of money on trading cards and keeps blabbing about saving the world via holographic card monsters. Yeah right. About as much my cup of tea as saving the world with monster-possessed war whirligigs (which are dangerous IRL. A bunch of kids were playing with them and their mothers' woks on my way to uni and my poor head made the unfortunate acquaintance of these metal weight rings. Ouch.)... Killing crazy maniacs sounds much, much better!!!

I think most German anime was until recently translated from the English translation (or the Italian one) as well- until the entertainment industry people realized the average viewer age had gone up to the late teens to early twens and started subbing/dubbing seriously (there are some VERY good dubs of various Miyazaki films out here). Early episodes of Detective Conan are especially hilarious! Unfortunately, I forget most of them, too... the "killing with the intention to kill" got to be a family saying, though.

I hate the dub SO MUCH! They ALWAYS make the show look/feel/sound more kiddier and stupid when they dub it. Everyone says pointless,corny things that no person in their right mind would say in real life. "take a chill pill"? I cannot even begin to tell you how much I hate this phrase

The opening is just some random electric guitar solo and it looks like they just cut and pasted certain parts of every single opening to make one opening.

Can't find ONE voice that I cann stand. Possibly Horio...he's less annoying but he doesn't really sound all boastful/arrogant/ridiculous like the japanese version...guess I can live with him

sakuno - just....stop talking please. She sounds like she has a horrible head cold. A furby would probably sound better/more accurate
tomo - couldn't care less. annoying in the japanese version, annoying here
ryuzaki - isn't she supposed be a grandmother? she sounds 30-40 years old MAX
momo - sounds like a cowboy....I don't even WANNA go there
ryoma - has the emotional range of a teaspoon. It's either monotone, or slightly mocking monotone...you pick.
kaido - sounds too high for my taste......and i think he's got a NY accent *shudders*. He hisses strangely too. Watch episode 4 at the end.....first time I've ever seen someone hiss the word "yess-ss-sss-ss"
inui - everyone says they like his voice. I don't. He doesn't sound mad scientist/cynical/utterly insane enough for me. Sounds more like some college nerd
oishi - can possibly live with his voice......he still says strange stuff though
kikumaru - too low, not playful enough, doesn't even match his character design. It's like watching a telletubby with the voice of darth vador
fuji - they....killed him. the end
tezuka - can live with it i suppose. Doesn't sound authoritative enough though. Can't imagine him saying "everyone twenty laps!"
taka - haven't heard him....yet......
inoue/shiba - i'd say these are the best voices. If you ignore the completely stupid things they say you'll like them too
nanjirou - ahahaha he sounds like a yank. Sorry to the american people here (I'm from england) he sounds like the stereotypical yank. Truly.....american people don't have this type of accent (from what I've heard) and if they do it's probably not as bad as this. Kalpin (karupin)<---hahahhaah the wrongness of this just blows my mind
