Yay.
Partially dedicated, okay, dedicated to dyaoka-san who more or less provided me with the much needed yet temporary spark of inspiration used to write this small fic.
I like first person. SO it's first person POV -- Saya, of course. And then obviously it switches to third person POV. And I haven't seen past episode 14 of Blood+ (even though I have 15 downloaded) so yeah if it conflicts with future events…Pardon me. We'll just assume it's a side thing.
And the obvious disclaimer: I own nothing except my own words. Characters aren't mine. I would like to own Haji though...^^;

Ano toki…
That time. It was far beyond my memory. Suppressed by the strong will of my mind.
Or perhaps I just did not want to recall it.
His eyes willed it. They wanted something from that past. Every time with just a single stare, a fragment of my memory floated to the surface of my vision. Too small to cause pain or even a fleeting moment of happiness.
What was it that I wanted from those memories that I didn't have before me? Some unknown puzzle pieces that comprises this girl known as Saya. But that is all it is. A mere puzzle waiting to be solved.
A solution deep down I should not know.
----
He never smiles.
That mysterious glance that holds no expression.
Haji, he is called.
I speak, wondering about my past, this yearning desire to know what I know he knows. But no response. No answer. In his eyes, I want to believe that he’ll tell me someday, but there is something that is holding him back.
Fear? I laugh and think that he knows no fear.
Sworn secrecy? I wouldn't doubt the possibility. Perhaps somewhere in my buried past there was an unspoken promise that was held between him and my former self.
----
"Why do you hide the truth from me, Haji?" Saya turned to face Haji, whose fingers were still moving along the cello strings creating a thin wall between him and Saya. In his slight refusal to answer her question, his eyes remained fixed away from her own, which he could feel piercing the shell he placed around himself.
Once again. No answer. She looked away from him once more and returned her focus to the passing night scenery. Itsumo itsumo. Always this way, he managed to hold back his words, or just never say anything. Her patience wearing thin, Saya stood up from her window seat, and walked over to Haji standing right next to him, as he continued playing a quiet cello sonata. As the end of the second movement came to its close, Saya placed her hand on top of his right hand, which immediately suspended all motion.
“Haji…” Saya's voice broke the sudden silence, as she knelt beside the chair in which he was seated. His eyes followed her motion, “There's a reason you won't answer my question isn't there? Even though I want to know the truth…”
“Saya…” Haji whispered, and in the moment he was going to say something else, he found that he couldn't say what he intended to tell her. Instead, a single phrase came to mind, as if hiding the truth from himself which he knew too well. “…tatakau.”
The same answer she had heard before.
“You must fight to find the answers you're looking for.” She removed her hand from Haji's, and placed them on her lap, a sigh escaping her thoughts. As I fight, I'll find my answers? But, so far, I've found none. How much longer…must I feel this…
He watched as the doubt continued to grow within her eyes, shouting their disapproval. They grew weary of fighting this battle, which had only just begun, and she continued to question him. In fighting I'll find it? Drenched in the blood of myself and my enemy, I'll find this answer? Something that you probably already know? Why? Why must I…? Her thoughts ceased when he picked up her delicate hands in his own. Dropping his bow gently to the floor, he moved his right hand lifting Saya's chin to face him. Within her eyes, she could feel her doubt surface as he looked silently down at her. In her attempt to look away her cheek met a small bed of white. Beneath the layers, his hand held a firm coldness, yet was gentle. Another mystery in itself with questions never to be answered.
In the instant Saya rose to her knees, a warm feeling rose to her cheeks, which increased tenfold as a warm hand balanced the two extremes. Her averting eyes suddenly halted their game and released their doubt, as his lips holding a warmth of their own softly touched her own.
"…that's the only truth you need to know…"
